Constipation in children

Constipation is very common problem for children. For most children, constipation means passing hard stools with difficulty less often than normal regular soiling may indicate that a child has bad constipation causing a blockage of the lower part of the gut. where no particular disease or illness is the cause of the constipation. It is important that constipation be recognised early to prevent it from becoming a long-term (chronic) problem.

Constipation has many causes. Common causes include slow movement of stool within the colon, irritable bowel syndrome and pelvic floor disorder, underlying associated diseases include hypothyroidism, diabetes, parkinson’s disease, celiac disease, non-celiac gluten, sensitivity, colon cancer, diverticulitis inflammatory bowel disease.

Hirschspruna disease

Hirschspruna disease (HSCR) or congenital intestinal anangliosis characterized by complete absence of neuronal ganglion cell from portion of the intestinal tract most commonly in the large intestine. The main sign or symptom of Hirschspruna disease is constipation usually appearing shortly after birth. This constipation is chronic in nature and usually not relieved with laxative. The present is of a patient managed with Ayurvedic treatment.

As per Ayurveda

Constipation is a disease condition resembling to vibandha, malavrodha, vitgrah, anaha, baddhakoshtata, Koshtabadhata describe the in Ayurveda.

According to Ayurveda constipation occurs due to imbalance in the function of apanavata. Inadequate diet and Lifestyle factors can lead to constipation. Apanavata when gets out of control due to these factors, is blocked in the lower part of the intestine resulting in constipation. It refers to bowele movement that are intrequent or hard to pass and is a General term used to indicate fewer bowel movements. Solidified hard stools, defecation and feeling of bloating, abdominal discomfort or incomplete elimination.

Constipation is a common cause of painful detection. Severe constipation includes obstipation (failure to pass stools or gas), intestinal obstruction, severe constipation and fecal impaction, which can progress to bowel obstruction and become life threatening. It is very common gastrointestinal disorder experienced by most children’s and adolescence at some time during their lifetime. Numerous condition can lead to constipation by disturbing the normal process of absorption, stool formation propelling of feces within the large intestine.

  3. Rectal prolapse
  4. Scrotal hernia
  5. umbilical hernia
  6. spastic colitis
  7. Laxative abuse

A large number of parents/ people use self-medication for constipation. This is not a good practice, especially if these used regularly for a longer duration.
